General Information
The Monastery of Chrysoleontissa was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is one of the most important monasteries on the island of Aegina. Every year thousands of Christians arrive on the island to worship the holy icon of Panagia Chrysoleontissa located in the Monastery.
Where is it located?
The Monastery of Chrysoleontissa is built in a remote location in the center of the island and just 2 km away from the monastery of Saint Nectarios. It is located on the mountainous side of the island and is about a 20-minute drive from the port of Aegina.
What do I need to know before my visit?
The Monastery of Chrysoleontissa at first glance looks more like a fortress than a monastery. Unlike most monasteries, it has a tower with loopholes, as well as high walls that protected it from pirate attacks. If you are on the island of Aegina on the 15th of August, it is worth making a stop at the Monastery of Chrysoleontissa, where every year the biggest festival of the island is organized.
