General Information
Paleochora was considered the capital of the island of Aegina for many centuries until the beginning of the 19th century. Also known as Mystras of the islands (Nystiotikos Mystras), Paleochora shares similar morphological features with Mystras in Laconia.
Where is it located?
The area of Paleochora is located on the northwest side of the island and is 7.8 km away from the port of Aegina. To visit the famous Paleochora, start with your car from the port of Aegina - and in only 15 minutes you will reach this fantastic place.
What do I need to know before my visit?
Paleochora is located on the northwest of the island and on the hill behind the slope of the monastery of Agios Nectarios. At the top of the hill dominates the impressive castle of Paleochora, while around the hill and at the foot of were built the houses of the locals. At the beginning of the 18th century, when the construction of the modern capital of Aegina began, it had as a consequence the abandonment of Paleochora. Today, in the area many ruins of old houses exist, while only 35 of the 350 churches built in the whole area survived.
